Libertas - a symbol of freedom, democracy?
Updated: Feb 21, 2019
Libertas | “Lady Liberty”
She stands tall, ever since her erection in 1886. Deemed a welcoming sight to immigrants from abroad. Does she however remain the same symbol, beacon of hope that she was for the numerous immigrants who immigrated over during the early days of her instillation?
How could she when those who govern, the nation she represents, intend to enclose the country with a #wall ? Even applying policies that restrict and limit access based on discriminatory measures. Liberty is gravely misinterpreted, misrepresented in the nation’s current state of affairs.
It is deeply saddening that we fail to learn from our past. She stands tall; but, from within the values she represents seem to be dismissed by those who are supposed to represent and govern us all, in this nation which stands as a democracy for all.
At the same time, we must be conscious of the fact that though many see her as a symbol of freedom and democracy this nation was established at the cost of repression, subjugation, slaughter of its Native population. For them she stands, I presume, as a symbol of destruction, invasion, genocide. This awareness is necessary for us to learn to be considerate, I feel.
